Council announces major step forward with launch of Active Travel Strategy
Forest of Dean District Council has unveiled its Active Travel Strategy, setting out a district-wide plan to make walking, wheeling, and cycling safer, easier, and more accessible for all residents.
The strategy outlines a long‑term vision for a connected, inclusive active travel network that supports healthier lifestyles, reduces carbon emissions, and enhances the district’s unique natural environment.
Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, Cllr Chris McFarling said:
"Active travel such as walking, wheeling, or cycling is an affordable form of travel that helps our communities stay connected, supports healthier living for everyone, and protects the natural environment we value so deeply.
"From the consultation that took place last year we know that many of our residents want more active travel options in the Forest but often choose the car for short trips because the alternatives can feel inconvenient, or even unsafe.
"The Active Travel Strategy sets out our aims and goals for improving and enhancing active travel in the Forest, whilst also highlighting plans for new routes that will make active travel journeys more accessible and enjoyable."
Active travel refers to modes of travel that involve a level of activity. The term is often used interchangeably with walking and cycling, but active travel can also include trips made by wheelchair, mobility scooters, adapted cycles, e-cycles, scooters, as well as cycle sharing schemes.
In 2025, the Council carried out a six‑week public consultation with residents, businesses, and Town and Parish Councils. The feedback gathered has directly informed the priorities, route planning, and improvements set out in the Active Travel Strategy.
The strategy will help to create an inclusive active travel network that promotes active travel as a healthy and sustainable mode of transport. It will work to connect local communities and enable inclusive opportunities, whilst complementing the Forest of Dean’s unique, captivating environment and leisure qualities.
Creating a high-quality Active Travel network will take time and investment. This strategy is an important first step, helping the Council to identify priorities and secure future funding.
By working together with residents, communities and partners, the Active Travel Strategy can help make the Forest of Dean a healthier, greener and more connected place to live and travel.
Active Travel Member Champion at Forest of Dean District Council, Cllr Richard Burton said:
"Active Travel is the best investment that we can make, with a fantastic payback of twenty to one. Nothing else improves health, the environment, reduces pollution, obesity and saves money. With current world events and rising fuel prices, there couldn’t be a better time to start saving by walking, wheeling or cycling.
"Our survey showed that there was a lot of support in the Forest for active travel, with many people saying that they would do more if there were safe, direct and attractive routes, and the Active Travel Strategy aims to provide them.
"We will be working hard with partners in national and local government to progress these routes and get the Forest moving."
