Forest of Dean continues journey toward UNESCO Biosphere designation
The Forest of Dean District is continuing its journey towards becoming the UK’s eighth designated UNESCO Biosphere - a positive step focused on celebrating the area’s people, place, and proud working landscape.
An initial nomination form has now been submitted to the UK Man and the Biosphere Committee for consideration. This represents the first stage of a longer process and does not result in any designation at this point. If the nomination is invited to progress, a full application would follow in September, before entering a formal international review process.
UNESCO Biosphere designation is best understood as a badge of recognition, not a rulebook to follow. It is an internationally recognised way of highlighting what makes the Forest of Dean District distinctive, helping to raise awareness, attract positive attention, and support the area’s long term future.
The Forest of Dean District has a long and proud history of enterprise and endeavour, shaped by its people, culture, and working landscape. This bid is about recognising and celebrating what already exists, supporting local traditions and enterprise, and helping ensure that the skills, knowledge, and customs that define the Forest are valued and passed on to future generations.
As local government reorganisation approaches, the bid also reflects a desire to provide continuity and long term recognition for the district beyond structural change. UNESCO Biosphere designation offers an internationally respected form of accreditation that can continue to benefit the Forest of Dean for decades to come, strengthening its profile both nationally and internationally.
Importantly, this work is not driven by political agendas. Biosphere status does not change planning rules, introduce new regulations, alter land ownership, or affect existing legal rights. The approach is voluntary and locally shaped, built on partnership, learning and collaboration, and designed to support and help communities rather than impose upon them.
The council recognises that there are questions, concerns, and differing views about the application and has been listening carefully to the feedback being received. That feedback is helping to shape how information is shared and how the process is explained, with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and reassurance. Alongside this, further briefings have been provided for elected members, and additional discussions have taken place with parish and town councils and certain community groups. Throughout, the intention is that the bid reflects the Forest of Dean’s character, needs, and ambitions and is in the best interests of local people.
To help ensure residents, businesses, and stakeholders have access to clear, accurate, and up to date information, a detailed FAQs section is available online, alongside information about the journey so far and what each stage of the process involves.
As the bid progresses, there remains a strong commitment to openness, transparency, and respectful dialogue, ensuring that the Forest of Dean’s identity, values, and voice remain central at every stage of the process.
