Residents move into affordable housing development located on Newent brownfield site

Southend Nurseries, a brownfield site in Newent is due to be completed in early November with 36 new affordable homes.

The development, which is owned and managed by Bromford Housing Association and constructed by E G Carter and Co. will see all 36 properties being designated for affordable housing. This follows a collaboration with Forest of Dean District Council to help facilitate the provision of Homes England funding to address housing needs in the district.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Claire Vaughan, said, “We are pleased to say that all 36 of the properties developed here will be available as rented, affordable housing, to help address the housing needs of the area, with priority given to those who already live in the district.

“Being located on a brownfield site, it has also been great to see the regeneration of this area to develop housing for our residents, located within easy reach of Newent town.”

The first residents began moving into the homes at the end of September, with the final residents due to move into the remaining 16 properties during the first week of November.

The properties will consist of eight one-bedroom flats, 18 two-bedroom houses, eight three-bedroom houses and two four-bedroom houses.

The site is located on what was formerly a nursery which had numerous large greenhouses on concrete bases, located just outside of Newent. Planning permission for the development was granted in June 2020 and this will be the first site that Bromford has developed in the Forest of Dean district.
