Statement from the Leader of Forest of Dean District Council, Cllr Adrian Birch
The following statement is from the Leader of Forest of Dean District Council, Cllr Adrian Birch in response to the Government decision to create a single unitary council for Gloucestershire.
“The Government has now announced its decision to create a single unitary council for Gloucestershire, replacing the current county and district council structure.
"While councils across the county have held different views on the best model for the future, the focus must now be on making the new arrangements work effectively for residents and businesses. We will work constructively with our colleagues across Gloucestershire to help ensure the new authority delivers high-quality services while meeting the needs of our communities in the Forest of Dean.
"The Forest of Dean is a special place, with a unique identity, proud communities and a strong sense of belonging. Throughout this process, my priority has been to ensure that our identity is recognised and protected, and that local people continue to have a strong voice in decisions that affect their communities.
"While the decision has now been made, there is still a significant amount of work to do as the new arrangements are developed. The Government has set out its view that a single authority will support more integrated services and economic growth across Gloucestershire. We will continue to engage with government and partners across the county to ensure the interests of the Forest of Dean are fully reflected and that local communities remain closely involved in the decisions that affect them.
"I want to reassure residents and businesses that there will be no immediate changes to the services they receive. Our focus remains on delivering high-quality services, supporting our communities and ensuring a smooth and well-managed transition to the new authority. I will continue to champion the interests of the Forest of Dean, ensuring its voice continues to be heard throughout the transition.
"I would encourage all residents to stay engaged and take every opportunity to have their say as changes are implemented. Public involvement will be essential in shaping how the new authority works, how decisions are made locally, and how the Forest of Dean is represented in the future. Your views matter and I hope as many people as possible will take part in the discussions ahead."
