Statement from the Leader of Forest of Dean District Council on Local Government Reorganisation
Forest of Dean District Council is continuing to seek clarity from Government following the announcement that Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) proposals affecting Gloucestershire will be paused while a review is undertaken.
Leader of Forest of Dean District Council, Cllr Adrian Birch, said:
"The Government's decision to pause Local Government Reorganisation in Gloucestershire creates uncertainty about what happens next, and we are awaiting further information on the review and what it means for councils, residents and staff across the county.
"Throughout this process, Forest of Dean District Council has been clear and consistent in its position. While we support the principle of devolution and recognise the opportunities it can bring, the council did not support the proposal submitted for Gloucestershire because we did not believe it reflected the views expressed by many people in the Forest of Dean or demonstrated that it was the best outcome for our communities.
"The Forest of Dean has a strong identity and a unique character. Throughout this process, many residents told us that it is important to them that local decision-making remains connected to the communities it serves. Those views have helped shape the position we have taken and will continue to inform our approach as further information becomes available.
"It is also important to recognise the significant amount of work that has been undertaken by councils across Gloucestershire over recent months. Officers and councillors from all authorities have worked professionally, openly and constructively in response to the Government's requirements.
"While councils have not always agreed on the preferred model for local government in Gloucestershire, we have continued to work together in the best interests of residents, businesses, communities and council staff. Those strong working relationships remain important and will continue whatever happens next.
"We share many opportunities and challenges across Gloucestershire, and I am committed to continuing to work closely with council leaders, partners and Government as we seek greater clarity on the future of local government in the county.
"In the meantime, our focus remains on delivering quality services for our residents, supporting our communities and ensuring that the voice of the Forest of Dean continues to be heard as discussions progress."
